When folks say "that's the best invention since sliced bread", it's really not encompassing that much time in the scheme of things.

Sliced bread first hit the store shelves on July 7th in Chillicothe, Missouri, and stayed local for a few years. The Chillicothe Baking Co. had the market to themselves.

In the 1930's, The Wonder Bread company bought an automatic bread slicer and took sliced bread national.

By some counts, there are over 2,600 bakeries in the US, and they take in over 30 billion dollars annually. That's a lot of bread! (rim shot)

So while your making your toast or sandwiches today, wish your bread slices a happy birthday. And try to come up with an invention worthy of the comparison.
