One of the reasons this number is the highest in years is that gas prices remain well below 2014 levels, providing an early holiday bonus to the more than 89 percent of holiday travelers who will drive to their destinations.

As far as New Englanders are concerned, more than 87% will travel to their destination by automobile. 226,000 people from New England will fly, and an estimated 45,000 will use trains, busses and other forms of transportation.

Total travel in New England is forecasted to see an increase of .4 percent from 2.06 million to 2.07 million.

A huge reason for the uptick in travel is the fact that we are paying the lowest gas prices at this time of the year since 2008 when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.90.
