It's a Thanksgiving Tradition like no other...the playing of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" at noontime. Every radio station I've worked at has taken part in this tradition, and indeed, for many years I was the one who dropped the needle on the vinyl! Over the years, listeners have told me how family and friends would gather around the radio and listen together before sitting down for the meal. Others have told me they would use the song as a timer for resting the turkey as it came out of the oven. Personally, I loved playing it, as it allowed me the time to leave the radio station, and drive the 2-3 miles to whatever store was open on the Holiday so I could buy more coffee and cigarettes, and pray the record didn't skip while I was gone (I've since dropped the smokes, still do plenty of coffee). I still haven't heard the song start to finish. Whatever your Alice's Restaurant Thanksgiving memories are...may they be good ones. Cheers. Happy Thanksgiving.
