Castle ruins in New Hampshire? Behold! The 'Stairs to Nowhere' in beautiful Chesterfield.

Magnificent isn't it? A winding stone staircase in the middle of the Madame Sherri Forest off of Gulf Road in Chesterfield.

Yankee Magazine wrote a nice article on the history of these stairs. Apparently they're from the ruins of Madame Sherri's Castle. Originally a singer in Paris, Madame Sherri married and moved to New York where she became a wealthy costume designer. She frequented the Chesterfield area and ended up building a "vacation" home of sorts after her husband died.

Rumor has it, she used to throw lavish parties (some say it was a brothel) for years with her city friends. New Hampshire's own Gatsby you could say.

After Madame Sherri got too old to party, she moved out, and completely abandoned the house. It was destroyed by fire in 1962 and all that remains is the stonework, the foundation, the columns, a fireplace, and the 'stairs to nowhere.'
