(Portsmouth, NH) - The lift span of the new bridge linking Portsmouth to Kittery, Maine is being put into place today.

The 300-foot-long center span is on a barge and is being lifted into position by the rising tide this morning. It will the be lowered onto its bearings by the outgoing tide this afternoon.

Once complete and in service, the center span will weigh approximately 4-million pounds. 8 steel cables will put the counterweights up and down to lift the centerspan.
