Class Action Lawsuit Against Massachusetts College that Abruptly Shut Down

A report from the Associated Press says some former students who attended a Massachusetts college that abruptly closed have filed a class-action lawsuit against the school, administrators and trustees.

The lawsuit filed was filed Monday in federal court in Boston and alleges Mount Ida College officials deliberately misled students about the severity of its financial problems before it closed back in May of this year. The Newton, Mass campus was sold for $75 million to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, which is using the site for career development programs.

The suit says the consequences of the closing were "catastrophic" for students, forcing them to hastily find alternative institutions and leaving some with credits or degree programs that cannot be transferred.

The suit seeks unspecified damages. Attorney General Maura Healey's office has been  investigating the circumstances surrounding the closure.
