According to the Coast Guard, eighteen people have died in New England since last October. That's compared to seven in a 12 month period that ended in October.

A Coast Guard recreational boating safety specialist thinks that too many people who are paddling in kayaks, canoes and paddleboards are not prepared as well as they should be.

The popularity of all this recreation on lakes, rivers and the ocean have taken it's toll on rescuers and first responders. Too many of the paddlers don't have the proper safety gear, and lack the skills needed when conditions change, which can happen rather quickly on any body of water.

By all means, make sure to wear a life jacket whenever you are on the water, and be completely aware of your surroundings and the potential for changing conditions.
