These mortar shells are about the size of a softball, and are supposed to be launched from a tube-like device.

This incident took place on Saturday night in front of the man's family. In a report from CBS Detroit:

' Walled Lake Police Chief Paul Shakinas said when first responders arrived, they found the man unresponsive, not breathing, and suffering from severe trauma to the back of his head.

“Hands down, the worst I’ve ever seen,” Shakinas said. “I’ve seen (fireworks) accidents, but never causing a fatality. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The report includes the oft used phrase "Alcohol was a factor", and goes on to say the deceased might not have known the device was lit.

I just wrote yesterday regarding fireworks safety in anticipation of stories like this one. Let's please do what we can to make this a fun but safe holiday for you and your neighbors.

Also, take mind of your pet dog who might not like all the loud noises that come with fireworks. Do your best to keep them comfortable and out of harms way.
