Three volumes of Dover records encompassing the years 1657-1807 were recently returned to the city.

They have since been digitized and also have been published on the city's website.

These records apparently had been sold by accident by the Dover library after they had been moved there after the 1933 City Hall fire.

According to an article published at Fosters.com, Dover City Clerk Karen Lavertu was alerted that these missing documents were about to be up for auction.

“I was contacted in 2008 by a professor in Seattle who told me I should go to a Texas auction site because he thought there were some historical records that might belong to us,” Lavertu recalled.

Since it is against the law to own original records that belong to a city clerk, legal steps were taken to get them back.

Reader's can now look back at election results, tax records, resolutions, even steps that were taken regarding preparations for small pox.

It's a huge piece of Dover's long history and it has been returned to it's rightful place.
