Foreigner Take to the High Seas for Hits-Packed Intimate Show

Foreigner
Ultimate Classic Rock

Some days, this music reporting job is exactly as cool as you’d think it would be. For example, earlier this month we were invited to watch Foreigner perform live at an intimate venue as part of a four-day Carnival Cruise Lines getaway.

The group, who soon after would be kicking off their big ‘Soundtrack of Summer‘ tour with Styx and Don Felder, clearly relished the chance to play in front of a smaller crowd inside the massive cruise liner’s beautiful Blue Sapphire lounge. They delivered a diamond-sharp 90-minute set jam-packed with just about every single one of their biggest hits, including ‘Head Games,’ ‘Double Vision’ and an extended take on ‘Juke Box Hero.’ Heck, the mighty ‘Dirty White Boy’ was probably the least popular song they played, if that gives you an idea of how things went down.

The place was packed and everybody went suitably bonkers. Of course, that’s partially due to the setting. As Foreigner singer Kelly Hansen and bassist Jeff Pilson pointed out during a quick front-deck interview prior to the show — complete with a re-enactment of ‘Titanic”s famous ‘My Heart Will Go On’ scene — there are advantages to playing at a place where nobody could possibly have to go to work the next morning.

“People are so relaxed, they’re ready for a good time,” Hansen explained. “And it’s fun for us. It’s a different kind of thing to get on a boat and do something like this.” After Pilson got right to the heart of the matter — “what’s really nice is playing for a crowd that doesn’t have to drive home” — Hansen completed his thought: “… and they’re 13 feet from their bedroom.”

The cruise itself was a blast: smooth seas, lovely accommodations, beautiful weather, ridiculously friendly staff, great food and drink everywhere you looked, and very few people walking around like zombies with their eyes locked on their smartphones. We went to the Bahamas and saw Mick Jagger‘s house — and of course, Oprah Winfrey’s TWO houses.

So, in short, we highly recommend this adventure for any rock music lover looking for a safe, fun adventure on the high seas. The cruises are very reasonably priced, and for a bit more you can even take part in a V.I.P. meet and greet with the band — complete with complimentary champagne — before the show.

The Carnival Live Concert Series will be presenting concerts by more great rock bands over the coming months, including Styx, REO Speedwagon, Chicago and Kansas. You can get all the tour dates and booking information at Carnival’s official site.
