The fire was called in on a Pleasant Street location in Somersworth early yesterday afternoon.

"Somersworth Fire Chief Keith Hoyle said the fire department arrived soon after the 12:37 p.m. dispatch call to the duplex at 17-19 Pleasant St. As soon as emergency personnel arrived, they witnessed two contractors using a ladder to rescue an 11-year-old autistic girl from her first-floor bedroom window. Though the window was on the first story, it was too high from the ground to climb out. Her mother was able to evacuate the house safely."

The girl was sent to Wentworth Hospital in Dover after being treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Firefighters also rescued a dog at the scene. According to witnesses the dog appeared quite limp when brought out of the building, but firefighters gave the dog oxygen and then was taken to a local veterinary hospital where last reports had him recovering well.

The hero contractors weren't named in the article, so we can't personally congratulate them. But anybody who runs towards a situation that most people run away from to help people in need is a hero in my book.
