After the Eagles wrapped up their tour last July, Glenn Frey and his family were vacationing in Hawaii, but then checked into a Los Angeles hospital to be treated for an intestinal infection in October.

After that, Frey planned to perform at the Kennedy Center Honors in December. But, needing surgery, the band cancelled the gig.

Frey was then admitted to a hospital in New York City with a bad case of pneumonia.

According to his good friend Bob Seger, who spoke to the Detroit Free Press in a wonderfully revealing interview:

“They were trying like hell to keep him alive . . . [His manager] pulled every ace out of the hole — he had the eight best specialists working on Glenn, But the pneumonia worsened, weakening his immune system and aggravating the pre-existing conditions. First, he caught one set of pneumonia, then he caught a very virulent set of pneumonia. He was in a coma, and he’d come out, but then he couldn’t breathe. They’d put him back in a coma. About a month ago, they had to throw up their hands.”

Frey's brother Alan, who is a mechanic in Arizona, said his brother fought to keep his condition a secret to the end.
