A law-abiding citizen should smack away any free drinks offered to them, but that is highly unlikely.

Free drinks are one of the perks of being a great patron at a bar, but little do you know that you are actively participating in a crime.

I was never aware of that fact, but some casual digging into New Hampshire statutes regarding alcoholic beverages confirms it. The law states that "no licensee shall give away free drinks to customers, patrons, members, or guests, in any manner."

This is an example of a law that, much like internet piracy, is on the books but nobody pays attention to it. I don't think my last bartender was thinking about it as she poured free shots down my throat hole.

A good relationship between a bartender and patron is built around mutual respect, good conversation and some drinks on the house. I don't think that will change anytime soon.

So the next time a bartender offers you a free drink you look them in the eye, kindly inform them of New Hampshire's laws around free alcoholic beverages and then proceed to slug down that rum and coke.

Hey. If it's free, it's for me.
