Major studios have been in nostalgia overdrive for years, with everything from Transformers to new Star Wars sequels to Disney’s live-action remakes of classic animated films, and even a…Power Rangers movie…yeah, sure, why not. But A24 has their sights set on a different kind of nostalgia with plans to revisit the golden age of MTV with James Ponsoldt, the director of The Spectacular Now and last year’s acclaimed drama The End of the Tour.

Remember, if you will, a time when MTV actually played music videos instead of reality shows and Teen Wolf and…whatever they’re up to over there these days. It was a time when names like Kurt Loder and Tabitha Soren were as familiar to teens as the Kardashians are to toddlers today. If you grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, you probably have some fond memories of MTV — you might even call it nostalgia.

That said, A24 has set writer / director James Ponsoldt to adapt Rob Tannenbaum and Craig Marks’ I Want My MTV, and while it is sort of capitalizing on our nostalgia, it’s certainly an interesting project and one that will inevitably be far more rewarding, thoughtful and dignified than, say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Here’s how A24 describes their film version of I Want My MTV, Tannenbaum and Marks’ non-fiction best-seller which used interviews with executives, TV personalities and musicians featured on the network:

“I Want MY MTV” chronicles the founding and first 10 years of the network, a golden era in both music and television where MTV became the emblem of a new generation. The network was a radical idea that no one thought would succeed; but what started as a channel showcasing videos from obscure British bands soon transformed into a cultural sensation that tapped directly into the imagination and spirit of contemporary teenagers. The same passionate, reckless young group that built the company ushered it into a global phenomenon that deeply influenced everything from movies, music, and television to fashion, sports, and politics.

The film will be a fun, immersive look at the network’s rise, and will weave the book’s testimonials into a thrilling and celebratory account of this one-of-a-kind cultural moment.

Ponsoldt is currently in post-production on The Circle, his new sci-fi thriller based on the Dave Eggers novel of the same name and starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega. That film hits theaters sometime this year.
