Rob Konrad, a former Miami Dolphins fullback, survived a night trying to avoid jellyfish and sharks.

According to CNN, on Wednesday Konrad departed alone on his fishing vessel for a fishing trip that turned out to be a long night of survival.

Konrad said that at about 1pm he hooked a fish, as he was reeling it in a wave hit his boat knocking him into the water. Konrad said in a press conference that prior to this he had set his boat on auto pilot for 5mph pointed east towards the Bahamas.

Konrad said,

"I quickly realized I was in a real bad situation, I made a decision that I was going to start swimming toward shore, west."

He was constantly stung by jellyfish, and was circled by a shark at one point that night.

“There was a lot of stuff glowing at night, probably some jellyfish” Konrad told the press

During the 16 hours, Konrad missed two opportunities to be rescued. At one point he said that he was floating 50 yards from a fishing boat but none of the fishermen spotted him. The other time, he said that a Coast Guard helicopter flew by him, but once again he went unnoticed.

Konrad’s constant determination to push on against the current, wind, and salt water in his eyes was heavily dependent on returning to his daughters. He told reporters,

“I’ve got two beautiful daughters, I was hitting shore.”

Although Konrad is no longer a Miami Dolphin, he still has the mascot’s spirit, and apparently its swimming capabilities too.
