You can imagine my trepidation when I first stumbled upon this local snake yesterday in the rugged wilderness of Gonic, NH. Actually it was sunning itself quite peacefully on the wooden bridge of a small brook and the brown and gray pattern could be seen from several yards away.

This is an eastern milk snake which is quite common and completely harmless to humans, but not to other snakes according to this link.

As a non-herpetologist and a true New Englandah, I spent several minutes wondering "Zattah Timbah Rattlah? Zattah Timbah Rattlah?" but alas it is not. Also, despite all appearances, this guy is really tiny, those are dried blades of grass around him and he's really not much bigger than a worm.
