In other words, traffic is going to be a mess in Durham this weekend.

Close to 2,900 freshman students are making their way into Durham this weekend, so you can expect some delays if you are doing business in Durham over the next couple of days.

The high congestion hours will be today (Friday) until about 3pm. Sunday is when the older students arrive with classes set to begin on Monday.

Should you need to get to Durham this weekend, according to the UNH website:

The Durham Police have arranged to provide ample parking along Madbury Road and within the Pettee Brook parking lot that should not hamper or disrupt traffic in the area. Finally, the Orion property located on Main Street/Church Hill has also coordinated efforts with the Durham Police and a strategy has been developed that will allow parents to drop off belongings within the fire lanes of the complex, move on to parking located off-site, and return to assist their children in moving into their apartments."

Growing up in Durham, you learned to stay away from the downtown area while the students moved in. It's not quite the mad house scene that Boston is this time of the year, but for a small town like Durham, the influx of students and their U-hauls can slow things down quite a bit.

Of course, within a couple of weeks, we can look forward to the homesick freshmen, who aren't quite ready to leave the nest, moving out.
