After hours of exhausting research, I've discovered that the criss cross fork pattern became a signature look for this cookie due in part to the popularity of the Pillsbury recipe back in the 1930's.

I will not eat any peanut butter cookie unless it has this traditional forking pattern. To do so would be a forking calamity and a totally forking ingenuine act.
