Jan Hooks was one of the most valuable and talented performers of SNL during the late 80's, and perhaps of all-time in the show's history.

Hooks was on the show during the last era that I actually was awake at that hour and watched the show live. She was a female version of Dan Ackroyd and Phil Hartman. You could plug her into almost any type of situation and more often than not she'd be the funniest one in the sketch.

From her spot on takes of Hillary Clinton, Kathy Lee Gifford and many others, to her portrayal of Candy Sweeney of The Sweeney Sisters, Jan Hooks was as versatile a performer SNL has ever had.

After SNL, she starred in the final two seasons of CBS' Designing Women, and also appeared on 30 Rock.

Jan Hooks died Thursday morning in New York City from a "serious illness".  She was 57.
