Rock's most mad-cap madman pulled a good one on this date in '67.

The Who were known, of course, for smashing their equipment at the end of many of their performances, but Keith Moon took it up a notch on this night for their appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

The band's technicians had already loaded a flash powder explosion into Keith's bass drum, but Keith decided to add another one.

As you can clearly see in the clip, this is a raucous explosion that even takes the band members by surprise. Pete Townsend has long claimed he lost most of his hearing due to the explosion. His hair was also singed, and Moon ended up with a cymbal crashing into his leg.

All in all, just another night on the road with Keith Moon and The Who.
