Some property owners face an average estimated sewer betterment fee of $20,000. Ouch!

Some Kittery residents are up in arms that the wording in a 2013 bond vote that funded a sewer extension project in the northwest section of town was not transparent.

They say that nowhere in the description of the ballot did it say that 158 residents would be responsible for half of the $7.6 million project.

They are a little upset and I don't blame them.

In fact, our friend Jen Thayer posted this video on her Facebook page.

Can you imagine receiving a bill from your town for a service that most might agree is a 'betterment' but you're now on the hook for at least twenty grand? And you voted for it.

This bond should have been spelled out from A-Z and then from Z-A. I'm not the most attentive of readers, but my eyes are attracted to large numbers on a page, especially if they are preceded by the words "you owe".

And it's ironic in this case that the 'betterment' involves sewers. That's where that original non-transparent bond should belongs.
