Sad to see another local restaurant in Somersworth close.

The good news is the call for their sour dough bread is such that they had to go off-site to meet the demand. The bad news is they have decided to close Leaven Beer and Bread House on October 1.

The owners of the restaurant announced to the public in an open letter what led to the decision.

Last year, due to an unexpected demand for our sourdough bread, we had to move the bakery off-premise to accommodate this growth,” the letter states. “While we are focusing on strategic growth of our wholesale bakery, it’s time to do what’s right for the restaurant.”

For their part, Leaven invoked high standards regarding their fare as they sought to compete with the dining destinations in Portsmouth and Dover, and succeeded, at least as far as the quality of food was concerned.

Somersworth residents must go and support local restaurants. I realize there are many options, especially as far as pizza is concerned. But downtown Somersworth is looking great now after all the improvements, and it would be nice to see new local restaurants become successful.
