Mattress Firm, with more than 3,200 stores across the United States, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

According to the their website, Mattress Firm is the nation's leading specialty bedding retailer. However, CNN Business claims the mattress company will "quickly close" 200 under performing stores, and decide on 500 others in the next few weeks. That includes stores here in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The report by CNN says the chain, founded in 1986, has struggled with over expansion. They purchased Sleepy's in 2016, and Mattress Giant, four years earlier. Online competition from Casper and Amazon have also led to fewer people entering a store and actually trying out a mattress.

Mattress Firm says they plan to exit bankruptcy in about two months.
