I was pleasantly surprised to learn in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Barrington is a memorial to dogs associated with the military.

As you might imagine, man's best friend can also be a soldiers best friend in the field as more and more dogs are being recruited into K-9 teams.

You may also imagine that soldiers often come into contact with stray dogs during their tours of duty, and often befriend them. These dogs can become a source of comfort to the fighting men and women, and of course, strong bonds can form.

There are many stories regarding not only the job some dogs are asked to perform in harms way, but also of the therapeutic effects some canines have on the soldiers.

So I was proud to read in Fosters.com of the memorial that stands guard at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Barrington. The author of the article, Caitlin Andrews, describes the memorial as:

"a German shepherd made of stone. He’s adorned with dog tags and the American flag, with the inscription at his feet: “In memory of those war dogs who were truly man’s best friend.”

A fitting tribute indeed.
