Maine Department of Transportation officials are putting their foot down  on the contractor and are "mandating" that the new Sarah Mildred Long bridge open by the end of this month.

The original opening date of last Sept.1 has long come and gone, and according to seacoastonline.com, the original agreement with the contractor allows the Maine DOT the ability to fine them $1000 a day since that Sept 1 deadline.

As someone who frequents that area more than a couple of times a week, I must admit that I, like many other commuters, have become accustomed to the alternate routes, much to the chagrin of many of the local store owners who have missed much traffic over the last many months.

Here's hoping the new bridge will be open soon, and the local Rt.1 businesses who have seen a decline will once again be patronized by their loyal customers!
