It's going to cost you more to park at York Beaches.

Parking Meter Urban

Residents of York and visitors will be paying more to park near the beach beginning next summer. York selectmen approved changes to not only parking fees, but also parking tickets and residential beach permits.

The hourly parking rate will rise from $1 to $2. If you get a ticket, expect to pay $50, up from $25, and  a beach parking permit is being raised from $35 to $40.

The plan was proposed this past fall by police Capt. Charles Szeniawski, who said he analyzed data from 14 tourist communities from Boothbay Harbor to Salisbury, Mass., and found the average charge for parking is $2. He said the extra revenue could be used to buy new meters that could allow for credit card pay stations instead of the current meters that still take quarters.

Some business owners near the beach voiced concerns of the raise in rates, perhaps wondering if letting "the tourists pay for everything" was the proper way to go.

Regardless, in addition to the beach blankets, toys and sun-screen, make sure to bring extra quarters when you visit the York beaches next summer.
