According to the Portland Press Herald, an 8 year old girl, Phoebe MacDonald, spoke with the Portland City Council to ask them to ban all plastic straws from being used at Clock Tower Cafe at City Hall and she succeeded.

Jon Jennings, the City Manager, put the ban in place right away, naming the change, "Phoebe's Rule," the article says.

I am ALL FOR recycling and making the oceans a cleaner place.  Humans waste a ridiculous amount of stuff that is killing our oceans.  (#rethinkplastic)  I know I sound a little crunchy, but I am not alone when I say that I love animals and our natural surroundings and all this garbage that we just throw in to the ocean cannot be good for anyone or anything in or out of the water.

It can be really confusing what to recycle and what not to recycle, but HGTV has a great list of do's and don'ts.  For instance, I had no idea that you should not recycle shredded paper.  Also, you SHOULD recycle old clothes, like bras!  Who knew?  Now you and I do!

What a great example Phoebe MacDonald is for adults and for other children!
