A fixture of Saturday mornings to anyone of a certain age came to an end last weekend as the CW aired the last network batch of Saturday morning cartoons.

I haven't given much thought to the subject of cartoons in general for some time now, but when I heard this news, it saddened me. If you're like me, you spent a great of time in front of the television Saturday mornings watching Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, HR Pufinstuff, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters...I could go on. It represented the beginning of 2 days of no school, parents sleeping in, allowing you to get breakfast unsupervised, and there cartoons on every channel (all 3 of them) from 7am until lunchtime, sometimes longer. Even on the nicest days, I wouldn't go outside to play with my friends until after I'd watch whatever cartoon was my favorite at the time.

Here's a real good read on the subject of Saturday morning cartoons. I know there are many more cable networks these days offering much more in the way of children's programming. But there was simply something special about Saturday mornings, eating a bowl of Cocoa Puffs, and rooting for the coyote to get the road runner just one time.

What were some of your favorites?
