Given his generally unpredictable style and the overall air of secrecy surrounding its release, it’s impossible to guess what comedian Reggie Watts has in store for listeners with his upcoming album, ‘Scarves & Cabbages.’ But if his appearance alongside ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons on the July 22 episode of ‘Conan’ is any indication, it’ll offer an enthusiastic combination of the tuneful and the surreal.
As you can see in the video embedded above, Watts and Gibbons (along with Coheed and Cambria guitarist Travis Stever) showed up to perform a song titled ‘I Knew a Horse,’ which — as you might guess, given the title — finds Watts in country mode. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should go in expecting to hear Johnny Cash; Watts’ funnyman roots pull him closer to the tongue-in-cheek Western stylings explored on Ween‘s 1996 ’12 Golden Country Greats’ LP.
That said, there’s nothing wrong with a well-crafted parody — just ask “Weird Al” Yankovic, currently sitting pretty on top of the Billboard album charts with his latest hit record, ‘Mandatory Fun’ — and if nothing else, Watts clearly keeps excellent company. Love it or hate it, we’re guessing you’ll get more mileage out of ‘I Knew a Horse’ than most readers did when he covered Van Halen‘s ‘Panama’ a couple of years ago.
