On this day in 1959 pioneer rocker Buddy Holly died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. He was only 22. One of his best tunes is often overlooked and I'm writing this post to prove how great it is with the help of some other legendary music figures.

Just under 2 minutes long and packed with a hard driving almost punky vibe, this tune almost seems like The Ramones should have covered it. I didn't find any evidence of that, but there are some versions of this tune performed by people who need no intro.

You know I had to lead off with John Fogerty, don't be distracted by the 80's vibe or the cheesy sock hop dancing. Even on a VHS tape with tracking issues this song rocks!

Sir Paul performs a version here at The Roseland Ballroom that's 'a little more country' but probably exemplifies how "Rave On" sounded when it was originally played in Buddy's home town of Lubbock, TX.

Ok, so Gary Busey isn't technically a 'Rock Legend' but I defy you to say that this performance (from the Oscar nominated portrayal) doesn't flat out rock. I defy you! I'm done raving for now.

RIP Buddy Holly (September 7th, 1936 - February 3rd, 1959)
