Stephen King has written multiple stories about the terrors of spending hours and hours confined to a mattress. Both 'Misery' and 'Gerald's Game' come to mind. But there is something alarming that happens to every mattress throughout years of use that could very well creep out 'The King of Horror' himself.

Colonies of up to 10 million dust mites feeding on years of skin cells? So many that it could add an extra 10% of your mattresses' total weight?

Livescience has the (gross) scoop:

One of their favorite foods is dead skin, and people shed about one fifth of an ounce of the stuff every week, some of which surely ends up flaking into your mattress. (Also gross: About 80 percent of the material seen floating in a sunbeam is, in fact, flakes of dead skin.)

Oh, did I happen to mention that a Brand New Sealy Posturepedic Queen-Size Mattress is currently up for bids on The Shark's Spring Auction? Thanks to the folks at Wholesale Beds & Futons in Seabrook, NH. The current bid is at less than half of its value!

Fair warning to anyone that doesn't bid, don't let the bedbugs bite!
