Certain locations of Hannaford Supermarkets have begun charging their customers for bags.

According to a report from News Center Maine, if you live and shop in parts of Maine, you might be in for a surprise if you don't bring your reusable shopping bags with you to select Hannaford locations.

As of Monday, October 8th, Hannaford stores in York, Brunswick, Saco, Belfast and Kennebunk, Maine have started charging five-cents per paper bag. The surcharge, according to a Hannaford spokesman, is to help encourage shoppers to remember to bring their reusable shopping bags with them. The above Maine towns already have a ban on plastic bags.

Since I live in New Hampshire, I was curious if my local Hannaford Supermarket was joining in on this initiative. I asked at checkout and was told that the Granite State was NOT participating in the five-cents surcharge, although customers are urged to bring their reusable bags with them.
