In March, the Sports Authority chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, at the time saying it would most likely close 2 distribution centers as well as close to 140 of it's stores.

That plan seems to have changed as last week, Sports Authority said they would most likely pursue a sale rather than reorganize under Chapter 11 protection. They are more than $1.1 billion in debt.

There could be some buyers that might keep some of the stores open a a few of the locations, but it appears that much of the company's 450 stores could be liquidated.

It's always a shock to me when a big chain declares bankruptcy, or worse, has to liquidate. I remember Home Quarters Warehouse ("HQ to the rescue!", as the commercial went) being the top dog in home improvement stores until Home Depot and then Lowe's came along.

The HQ in Newington closed almost immediately with the new competition. There's a Wal-Mart on that location now.

I'm not sure if they are closing right away. If not, there's going to be great deals to be had at these stores.
