South Portland Police want to start a movement.

With 38 police officers in the United States having given the ultimate sacrifice so far this year, according to WMTW, the South Portland Police Department is asking the public to show support for the police in all communities by taking a selfie with the police.  (#SelfieWithACop)

It works like this:  You see a police officer and if they are not apprehending a subject or chasing said suspect, ask them if it's okay to take a selfie with them. Post it on your favorite social media with the hashtag #SelfieWithACop.

Police officers take their lives in their hands every day while trying to protect the public. It's heartbreaking to find out that any police officer has died in the line of duty. But there was something that hit home about Yarmouth, Massachusetts, police Officer, Sean Gannon that was a little more than another tragedy.  He was 32-year-old married man and beloved K-9 officer.

He and his K-9 were put to rest yesterday and I cried like a baby at the news coverage.  Like so many others, I wanted to do something and this seems like an easy way to show support for the boys in blue!

So, the next time you see a Police Officer, take a selfie and post it.  That little gesture will mean a lot.
