1. Always ensure you are burning seasoned hardwood. Any green or wet wood will lead to dangerous creosote deposits.
  2. Have your chimney inspected or cleaned in the spring, as soon as the burning season has ended. creosote deposits are easier to brush out, if any masonry damage is found, it can be repaired long before winter returns, and best of all: shorter time waiting for an appointment!
  3. Even if your furnace or boiler has already been service, the chimney and flue should be inspected by a chimney professional. Furnace gasses eat the chimney apart from the inside out and , unless inspected by a certified professional, often go unnoticed.
  4. Every chimney should have a cap on it.
  5. Always have one smoke detector per floor and carbon monoxide detectors near wood burning appliances and furnaces.
  6. Have a fire extinguisher readily available. Always replace your fire extinguisher every 7 years.
