Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders Throws His Hat Into Political Ring Once Again

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says he's running for president in 2020. After months of speculation, the 77-year-old Sanders made it official this morning, according to the Associated Press. Sander announced he will be seeking the Democratic nomination.

The self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton back in 2016 for the nomination but lost. Sanders has reshaped Democratic politics and earned a loyal following with his passionate defense of liberal proposals including free college tuition and single-payer health care. But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party's base.

Still, Sanders' name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies makes him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.

In an email blast sent to his supporters Tuesday morning and obtained by WMUR, Sanders states he will take on Wall Street, health insurance companies, drug companies, the fossil fuel industry, the military industrial complex, the private prison industry and the multinational corporations that he says exert an enormous influence over Americans’ lives.

The email asks for a grassroots campaign of at least one million supporters across the country.

Bernie Sanders is the tenth major candidate to declare candidacy for the 2020 election.
