Sylvester Beckett was a Portland-based lawyer and literary figure who hosted elaborate parties at the seaside home. He reportedly built much of the "castle" himself in 1874, using local stone.

The owner who bought the property in 1981 made numerous improvement to the home and also created beautiful garden areas on the one acre site.

She passed away last year, and her family has decided to place it on the market.

The property was recently listed for sale for $3.35-million.
