There are many reasons to put up a fence in your yard. The kind you choose, can say a lot about you and maybe your neighbors.

The fence you choose to put up around your house or property says a bit about your personality.

On a visit to California, I saw two fences I'll never forget. One was on a property near the beach, and the fence was made up of old surfboards, dozens of them. They were all different colors and it was the perfect choice for the surroundings.

The other fence I recall from that trip was made up entirely of old license plates. I'm sure it was well designed and well built, but it was very ugly to my eyes, and made the property look trashy.

I didn't know either of the property owners, but I'm assuming each fence said something about their personality. Creative, out of the box thinkers at the least.

I don't have a fence around my property (yet), and that might be because I would have a difficult time deciding what kind to put up. I love the barbed wire fence because that reminds me of my families farming roots. It is also a good deterrent to keep people away.

Here is what each fence type says about you:

Wooden Fence

A wooden fence gives off a warm welcoming feeling, much like like a Leave it to Beaver episode. The time it takes to maintain this type of fence shows that the owner has dedication and loyalty to his lawn.

Vinyl Fence

This indicates a low-maintenance person who is easy-going and likes things to just happen. A man or woman who would rather just chill with a beer and throw some jokes around.

Wrought Iron Fence

An option with mixed messages. An iron fence shows a strong need to protect one's property, but there are many iron fences that are actually quite beautiful. The owner of one of these can be hard on the outside, but also friendlier on the inside. Just don't try to trespass on their property.

Barbed Wire Fence

Somebody who you do not want to mess with. This kind of fence owner means business and does not want anybody meddling in their business. There is something to protect on that property, like crops or really expensive garden gnomes. The barbed wire is meant to keep people out (or in if it is in a prison.)

No Fence at All

This is truly the fence of a free spirit. The lack of a fence shows an openness to the world and new adventure. An owner that chooses the non-existent fence is infected with wanderlust and invites all to join in celebrations.
