I always wondered what creature or creatures instantly devour all the crab apples off my trees every spring. Yesterday I caught them in the act!

Of course, nearly three times the amount of these Cedar Waxwings took off when I first opened the front door. These brave and hungry souls remained to pig out on overripe apples while their more cowardly friends waited in a safer nearby perch.

They only eat about half of what they pick and the discarded fruit and droppings looked so terrible on my steps and walkway that I was too disgusted to take a picture of the resulting mess.
