Why Are NH Blue Jays So Fat in the Winter?

I just saw what appeared to be a 40 pound Blue Jay on an apple tree just down the road here in Dover, NH. After a little research, it turns out they're not as porky as they look.

Thanks to 'Lesley The Bird Nerd' , a Canadian birder, she has it all figured "oooot" when it comes to the mystery of how birds stay warm in these hideous winter conditions.
