Maine, New Hampshire, & Massachusetts Rite Aid Customers Could Be Eligible For a $10,000 Payout
If you were a frequent Rite Aid customer, there is a chance that you could have a massive payout coming your way.
A recent article on the HIPAA Journal website explains that the pharmacy chain recently settled a data breach lawsuit.
The lawsuit, which centered around a breach from June of 2024, affected as many as 2.2 million Rite Aid customers.
According to the article, on June 6th, 2024, RansomHub ransomware group hackers gained access to customers who shopped at the chain between June 6th and July 30th of 2017. The hackers managed to obtain personal information like names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and other ID documents.
While several people did file lawsuits against the company over the breach, these were all rolled into one class action lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleged that the company had failed to have effective cybersecurity measures and also failed to issue a notification about the breach until nearly a month after it was discovered.
According to the article:
The plaintiffs argued that the notification letters lacked important information, such as whether it was a ransomware attack and if the stolen data had been uploaded to the dark web. The plaintiffs claimed to have experienced an uptick in robocalls and spam following the data breach and said the 12 months of credit monitoring services were woefully insufficient.
If you were a part of the breach, you can file for your portion of class action lawsuit. What you will get for a payout depends on how many people apply to get compensation. The $6.8 million will be split between those who apply.
Or, if you have the proper documentation, you can file for up to $10,000 in documented losses.
