Considering the current state of the economy, it should come as no surprise that many people have picked up a part-time job or a side hustle.
While many have sought out this additional income streams in order to maintain the lifestyle that had before inflation caused the prices on nearly everything to skyrocket, some are doing it just in order to make ends meet.

For those who are unfamiliar with the term, a side hustle in an additional income stream. Unlike second (part-time) jobs, in most cases they are some kind of small business or work as an independent contractor position.
Driving for Uber & Door Dash, an owner/operator landscaping business, being a monetized social media personality, and being a part-time musician are great examples of side hustles.
What Are the Most Popular Side Hustles in Maine?
A recent study done by Casinos.com determined the most popular side hustles in each state.
The top 3 for Maine were not shocking but were a little surprising.
#3 Babysitting – Given the lack of affordable childcare in Maine, along with the fact that so many people need to work outside the hours when most childcare facilities are open, it does not surprise us that this would be a popular side hustle.
#2 Pet Sitter – Unless your pups or kitties are very self-sufficient, you need to have a pet sitter if you plan to go away for more than a day.
#1 – Local Handyman – This was a little bit of a surprise. We assumed that most Mainers would have the necessary know-how to deal with the majority of projects that they would encounter in their home. Also, you can always watch how-to videos on Youtube when you aren’t sure how to tackle a project. Apparently, we were at least partially wrong.
We were also kind of surprised that DoorDash and Uber was not on the list. Some days, it seems like every other person we talk to on the studio line is a DoorDash or Uber driver.
What About the Rest of New England?
The top 3 for New Hampshire were pet sitting, taking online surveys, and babysitting.
In Massachusetts, the top 3 were arbitrage betting, DoorDash, and babysitting.
The 3 most popular side hustles in Vermont were pet sitting, babysitting, and working as a DoorDash driver.

In Connecticut, the top 3 were day trading, babysitting, and online tutoring. While day trading may seem a little of place, it is important to remember how close much of Connecticut is to Wall Street.
And, in Rhode Island, the top 3 side hustles were DoorDash, babysitting, and pet sitting.
