
Do You Remember These 5 Nostalgic Ames Department Store Commercials?
Before Walmart became the retail juggernaut that is today, Maine had 26 Ames Department Stores across the state. Now they are long gone even though some of them in New England are still vacant today, like this one in Seabrook New Hampshire.

We had an Ames in Oxford, Maine that came to town in the mid-70s as an anchor store for the brand-new Oxford Plaza. It looked very much like this, with the Ames logo on a wood-shingled building face.
Ames slowly started to lose business with too many competitors and eventually closed all their stores after 44 years in business.
Ames had several commercials air on radio and TV and I've grabbed five of them from YouTube to show how the store went from the hottest items on sale to a complete liquidation. Do you remember any of these?
Ames Thanksgiving Week Sale - 1985
I think we had a TV very similar to this one that my parents bought at Ames for us, so they could watch whatever they wanted on the big console TV in the living room.
Ames Nintendo Commercial - 1986
1986 was the year the Nintendo Entertainment System was released and blew Atari out of the water. Ames of course had plenty in stock and that's where I got mine at the age of 15.
Ames "Better Values" Commercial - 1989
Did you know that Robin Leach of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous was a spokesperson for Ames?
Ames Savings Commerical - 1999
Ames tried hard to show how much money you can save when shopping at Ames, but Walmart was knocking on the door and was about to crush them.
Ames Going Out of Business Commercial - 2002
This was the end. After two bankruptcies, Ames Department Stores was no more by 2002.
