5 Favorite Breweries That Hurt When They Closed in Maine
It's funny, you don't really realize how much you love a brewery that has always been a staple in your state until you lose it. I still remember reading the announcement that Gritty's Brewery in Freeport is permanently closing and Maine felt like we took a huge loss.
Here are some other notable Maine breweries that have since permanently closed their doors that might make you want to cry they were so awesome.
Foulmouthed Brewery
Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub
This one was a huge loss that it think a lot of locals are still processing.
Gritty's in Freeport recently closed their doors in December 2025 which meant we didn't even have one last chance to romp their back deck this summer.
30 years of business and history closed that day but the good news is that their Portland and Auburn locations remain open.
"December 21st, 1988, Gritty McDuff’s proudly serves its first brewed on premise beers, and officially becomes Maine’s first brew. pub since Prohibition. The first two beers were McDuff’s Best Bitter and Portland Head Light Pale Ale." - Gritty's
Dirigo Brewing Company
In 2019, Biddeford's popular Dirigo Brewing Co closed its' doors which was really only in business for 3 years as they opened in 2016.
This brewery gave Biddeford something different to do before the city started opening new stores and restaurants like Cowbell.
207 Beer Company
Dang, Brewer natives most likely were super upset about this one. The once popular 207 Beer Company closed their doors in 2019 and I'm sorry but my first question here is what else do people in Brewer do for fun?
Sebago Brewing Company
Now this one hurt me to my core, dang. It was right on the corner downtown Portland and although the parking situation would overstimulate me immediately, their food always made up for it.
2022; the year the beer gods took another one that didn't deserve it. Their brew house in Gorham though is still running though.
