Only One College or University Makes Best List in Northern New England

US News & World Report's top 50 national universities show that only one college in New Hampshire made the cut for Northern New England.

If you expand to include all of New England, the list grows significantly thanks to Massachusetts. According to the Boston Globe, eight New England institutions, led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, landed on US News & World Report’s top 50 national universities and colleges.

 What Northern New England college made the US News & World Report best list?

Dartmouth College

For the second consecutive year, the top-ranked school was Princeton University. Dartmouth College was tied with UCLA for 15th place.

According to Dartmouth College's website, the mission is

Dartmouth educates the most promising students and prepares them for a lifetime of learning and of responsible leadership through a faculty dedicated to teaching and the creation of knowledge.

It's an expensive private college with four years running just under $63,000.

What about Maine schools like Bowdoin, Colby, or Bates College?

These are excellent colleges and DID make the US World & New Report's list of the top 50 National Liberal Arts Colleges.

• 5th - Bowdoin College (tied with Pomona College)
• 25th - Colby College
• 26th - Bates College

How are colleges and universities chosen as the best?

According to the Boston Globe, they quote LaMont James, the managing editor for education at US News & World Report,

By considering factors such as social mobility and post-graduate success, we aim to help students choose schools that not only provide a quality education but also prepare them for a successful and fulfilling future.

Some colleges don't participate in this ranking, because they think it's more about prestige and not the quality of the education.
