Campers Couldn’t Get Enough of These Maine State Park Campgrounds in 2025
It was another banner year for Maine's state parks, which certainly should come as no surprise.
We’re talking about some of the most pristine regions in one of the most beautiful states in the nation. Heck, every park feels like its own oasis. And this is especially true for the campgrounds found in many of these parks. The very idea of spending a night under the stars in these incredible locations is more than a treat—it’s an experience one won’t soon forget.
How Busy Were Maine State Park Campgrounds in 2025?
According to the Maine Bureau of Parks & Lands, nearly 270,000 travelers visited campgrounds in Maine's state parks this year. While that marks a slight dip from last year, it’s still a very solid number. There are a few reasons for the small decrease. One is the simple fact that tourism was down across the board. Another is that two campgrounds—Aroostook and Cobscook Bay—were closed for camping due to infrastructure improvements. So, all things considered, I’d say it was certainly a successful year.
Maine has 12 state parks with campgrounds (10 were open last year), though Baxter State Park—known for its separate campground system—is not included in these statistics. The parks span the entire state, from coastal areas to Aroostook County, Downeast Maine, the Midcoast, the Western Foothills, and Southern Maine.

Sebago Lake State Park claimed the top spot with more than 118,000 campground visits. That outpaced the competition by a wide margin, with Camden Hills State Park (28,463 visits) coming in a distant second.
Meanwhile, the smallest park, Warren Island State Park, recorded 1,429 visits in 2025. That’s actually quite impressive, considering it has just 12 campsites and is located on a relatively remote island.
