People are obsessed with haunted and abandoned places.

I certainly do not get the fad (that stuff scares me), but liking murder podcasts, watching horror, and breaking into abandoned places are "in" right now.

What I like are unique hikes to unique castles.

Abandoned Castle, New Hampshire

One of the most unique abandoned "castles" in New England is in Chesterfield, NH. To be clear, it was more of a mansion rather than a castle; however, all that is left is the stone foundation and the gorgeous stone grand staircase.

Getting to the ruins is fairly easy. The abandoned mansion in Chesterfield is a part of Madame Sherri Forest.

There are various hiking trails to see the ruins, like the Anne Stokes Loop - a 2-mile easy trail with ledge views and a pond loop. There is also the Wantastiquet Mountain, a longer 3-mile trek. This hike will offer great views of Mount Monadnock, the Berkshire Mountains, and the Connecticut River.

But the story of the mansion and the creepy folklore attached to it is what draws most people to this unique area of New Hampshire.

Madame Sherri's Castle Ruins

According to a Forest Society article, Madame Sherri famously built her mansion in Chesterfield as a summer chateau in the early 1900s. She was born in Paris and was a costume designer from New York City - she was wealthy.

Due to her lavish lifestyle, she often had extravagant parties. The kind with fur coats and chauffeurs. As her wealth began to disappear, so did the mansion.

During the mid 1900's, Madame Sherri abandoned the property. It fell victim to vandalism. So much so that when she returned in 1959, the interior was completely ruined.

Then, after a fire in 1963, the house burned down. Madame Sherri died two years later.

The folklore is that if you climb to the top of the staircase, the one that still remains intact, you can hear Madame Sherri's laugh.
