The south has college football, sure. The Northeast...we own hockey (despite a tough Bruins season and losing our captain this year).

Did you know that the oldest active hockey rink in the world is in Massachusetts?

No, it is not the TD Garden, but the Boston Bruins did play their first ever hockey game in the oldest rink in the world...

Back then it was known as the "Boston Arena." Today, however, the oldest ice rink in the world is known as "Matthews Arena," home to the Northeastern Huskies.

The Matthews Arena officially opened in 1910; however, the arena has had two devastating fires (one in 1918 and another in 1948), according to the Northeastern Huskies website.

Through the years, millions of dollars have been spent to keep the oldest hockey rink active...for good reason. There is an insane amount of history in this barn.

According to an Oldest article, Muhammad Ali trained in the arena's gym, and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy have given speeches in the arena.

So many people were distraught when they found out that the arena would soon be retired.

According to a Northeastern News article, a new 310,000-square-foot complex will replace the 115-year-old, Matthews Arena around 2028/2029.
