Does This Wacky Massachusetts Law Undermine Freedom of Speech?
Every state has a weird law. Like in New Hampshire, it is illegal to pick up seaweed at night...that's the law!
Wacky...but real.
Just recently, I read a law in Massachusetts that sounds like it could be undermining free speech.
Strangest law in Massachusetts:
In Massachusetts, it is illegal to start singing the national anthem and not finish it. Seriously - this is a "law."
According to Massachusetts Legislation, under section 9 of chapter 264, you must complete the "Star Spangled Banner" if you start it in any public place, such as a theater, restaurant, cafe, etc.
Further, the performance must be done without embellishment or the addition of other melodies.
Now I would never start the anthem for no reason other than to finish it...but doesn't this sound like an undermining of Freedom of Speech?
Also, don't artists put their own melodies and their own voice behind their renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner all the time?
I mean, everyone knows about the iconic Jimi Hendrix performance at Woodstock. And unique renditions make the song...better.
Chris Stapleton's rendition at the Super Bowl in 2023 is perhaps my favorite Star Spangled Banner rendition ever.
At any rate. I am SURE no one is actually ticketed or arrested for not completing the national anthem.
BUT, buts in case you are ever hit with the $100 fine associated with the crime, now you know it is a real law. A wacky one...but real.
