Jumpy Dogs Threatened at Kittery, Maine, Park

🔴 A person threatened to shoot dogs who jumped on them, and was reported to police

A person who threatened to shoot dogs that jumped on them at Fort Foster in Kittery was taken into custody by police Monday morning.

Kittery Police said they were notified about the threat around 9 a.m. made by a person who was upset about dogs being unleashed in the park. Dogs must be on a leash within the park between 10 a.m. and closing.

A person sitting inside a truck outside the park gate was initially approached by officers and refused to get out of their truck. After a brief standoff, officers found that person did not make the threat. The person who made the threat was found still within the park. That person and their truck were searched, and no weapons were found.

Police said the individual denied making the threat, but said they had a right to defend themself against aggressive dogs. The person was released after no one involved in the incident wanted to give a statement or pursue criminal charges.

Fort Foster is a park owned by the Town of Kittery that is open for hiking, swimming, and walking. There is also a playground at the park and a pavilion available for use by groups and individuals.
